Tongue cancer is a relatively rare type of cancer, but it can be serious if not diagnosed and treated early. The good news is that tongue cancer is often curable if it is found and treated early.

Symptoms of Tongue Cancer

The most common symptom of tongue cancer is a sore, lump, or thickening on the tongue that does not heal. Other symptoms may include:

* Pain in the tongue * Bleeding from the tongue * Difficulty swallowing * Difficulty speaking * Swollen lymph nodes in the neck

If you have any of these symptoms, it is important to see your doctor or dentist right away to have them checked out.

Diagnosis of Tongue Cancer

Your doctor or dentist will ask you about your symptoms and medical history. They will also perform a physical exam of your mouth and throat. If they suspect that you may have tongue cancer, they may Free Download one or more of the following tests:

* Biopsy: A biopsy is a procedure in which a small piece of tissue from the tongue is removed and examined under a microscope to look for cancer cells. * Imaging tests: Imaging tests, such as an MRI or CT scan, can help your doctor see the extent of the cancer and determine if it has spread to other parts of the body.

Treatment of Tongue Cancer

The treatment for tongue cancer depends on the stage of the cancer, which is determined by the size and location of the tumor and whether it has spread to other parts of the body. Treatment options may include:

* Surgery: Surgery is the most common treatment for tongue cancer. The type of surgery will depend on the stage of the cancer and may involve removing part or all of the tongue. * Radiation therapy: Radiation therapy uses high-energy beams to kill cancer cells. It may be used before or after surgery to shrink the tumor or to kill any remaining cancer cells. * Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy uses drugs to kill cancer cells. It may be used in combination with surgery or radiation therapy. * Targeted therapy: Targeted therapy uses drugs that specifically target cancer cells. It may be an option for people with advanced tongue cancer that has spread to other parts of the body.

Prognosis of Tongue Cancer

The prognosis for tongue cancer depends on the stage of the cancer at the time of diagnosis and treatment. The earlier the cancer is diagnosed and treated, the better the prognosis.

The five-year survival rate for tongue cancer is about 70%. This means that about 70 out of 100 people with tongue cancer will survive for at least five years after diagnosis.

Prevention of Tongue Cancer

There is no sure way to prevent tongue cancer, but there are some things you can do to reduce your risk, such as:

* Quitting smoking * Limiting alcohol intake * Eating a healthy diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables * Getting regular dental checkups

Tongue cancer is a serious disease, but it is often curable if it is found and treated early. If you have any symptoms of tongue cancer, it is important to see your doctor or dentist right away to have them checked out.
