Violet Jessop was a Titanic survivor who also survived the sinking of two other ships, the RMS Olympic and the Britannic. Her story is one of courage, resilience, and a remarkable twist of fate.
Early Life and Career
Violet Jessop was born in Argentina in 1887. She was the daughter of Irish immigrants who had moved to South America in search of a better life. Violet's father died when she was young, and her mother struggled to support her family. Violet was forced to leave school at a young age and work to help her family make ends meet.
In 1908, Violet got a job as a stewardess on the RMS Olympic, a luxury ocean liner that was the sister ship of the Titanic. Violet loved her job and was proud to be part of the crew of such a prestigious ship. She quickly rose through the ranks and became a senior stewardess.
The Sinking of the Titanic
On April 10, 1912, the RMS Titanic set sail from Southampton, England, on her maiden voyage to New York City. Violet Jessop was on board as a stewardess. Four days later, the Titanic struck an iceberg and sank in the North Atlantic Ocean. Over 1,500 people died in the disaster.
Violet Jessop was one of the lucky ones who survived. She was in a lifeboat that was lowered into the water shortly before the Titanic sank. She spent the next four days in the lifeboat with other survivors, adrift in the cold ocean.
The Sinking of the RMS Olympic
In 1914, Violet Jessop joined the crew of the RMS Olympic, which was serving as a troop ship during World War I. On October 12, 1914, the Olympic was torpedoed by a German U-boat. Violet was on board at the time of the attack.
Once again, Violet Jessop survived. She was in a lifeboat that was lowered into the water shortly before the Olympic sank. She spent the next few days in the lifeboat with other survivors, adrift in the ocean.
The Sinking of the Britannic
In 1916, Violet Jessop joined the crew of the Britannic, which was the sister ship of the Titanic. The Britannic was serving as a hospital ship during World War I. On November 21, 1916, the Britannic struck a mine and sank in the Aegean Sea. Over 1,000 people died in the disaster.
Violet Jessop was once again one of the lucky ones who survived. She was in a lifeboat that was lowered into the water shortly before the Britannic sank. She spent the next few days in the lifeboat with other survivors, adrift in the ocean.
Later Life
After the sinking of the Britannic, Violet Jessop returned to England. She continued to work as a stewardess for several years, but eventually retired in the 1950s. She spent her retirement years in England and died in 1971 at the age of 84.
Legacy
Violet Jessop's story is one of courage, resilience, and a remarkable twist of fate. She survived the sinking of three ships, including the Titanic. Her story is a reminder that even in the face of adversity, hope and courage can prevail.
