By Red West with Dave Marsh
From the moment I met Elvis Presley, I knew we were going to be friends for life. We were both just kids, growing up in the rough-and-tumble neighborhood of Lauderdale Courts in Memphis, Tennessee. We shared a love of music, and we both dreamed of one day making it big.
We spent our teenage years together, hanging out at the local record store, playing music, and getting into all sorts of mischief. Elvis was always the life of the party, and he had a way of making everyone around him feel good. He was also a natural performer, and it was clear from the beginning that he was destined for stardom.
In 1954, Elvis signed a contract with Sun Records, and his career took off like a rocket. I was there every step of the way, playing guitar in his band and helping him write songs. We toured the country together, and we saw firsthand how Elvis's music was changing the world.
As Elvis's fame grew, our friendship only deepened. We were like brothers, and we knew that we could always count on each other. We went through good times and bad times together, and we always came out stronger on the other side.
In 1977, Elvis died tragically at the age of 42. I was devastated, but I knew that I would never forget him. He was my best friend, and our friendship would live on forever.
Radio Days, Rock n' Roll Nights is my personal account of my lifelong friendship with Elvis Presley. It is a story of love, laughter, and loss. But most of all, it is a story of a friendship that was unbreakable.
I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.
Sincerely,
Red West
