Muhammad's book is divided into three parts. In the first part, she lays out the problem with the current education system. She argues that the system is based on a deficit model that assumes that all students are capable of learning at the same pace and in the same way. Dr. Gholdy Muhammad is a professor of literacy education at Georgia State University. She is the author of several books, including Colored People: A Memoir; The Hip Hop Education Guidebook: Volume 2; and Cultivating Genius: An Equity Framework for Culturally and Historically Responsive Literacy Instruction. Muhammad is a leading voice in the field of education equity and has been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Education Week.
