Nguyen was born in 1947 to a Vietnamese father and a white mother. His father abandoned the family when Nguyen was young, and his mother struggled to make ends meet. Nguyen grew up in a tough neighborhood, surrounded by gangs and violence. At a young age, he learned to fight and steal to survive.
