What is Ankylosing Spondylosis?

AS is a chronic inflammatory disease that primarily affects the spine. It can cause pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility in the back, neck, and other joints. AS is a type of spondyloarthritis, a group of conditions that also includes psoriatic arthritis, reactive arthritis, and enteropathic arthritis.

AS is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. The exact cause is unknown, but it is believed that the immune system plays a role in the development of the disease.

Symptoms of Ankylosing Spondylosis

The most common symptoms of AS are:

  • Pain and stiffness in the lower back, which is worse in the morning and after periods of inactivity
  • Pain and stiffness in the neck, shoulders, hips, and other joints
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Fever
  • Eye inflammation (uveitis)

In some cases, AS can also cause spinal deformities, such as kyphosis (hunched back) or scoliosis (curved spine).

Diagnosis of Ankylosing Spondylosis

There is no single test that can diagnose AS. Your doctor will typically diagnose AS based on your symptoms, a physical examination, and X-rays of your spine and other joints.

Treatment of Ankylosing Spondylosis

  • Surgery: In some cases, surgery may be necessary to correct spinal deformities or relieve nerve compression.
